Evensong is a service of choral evening prayer, offered by the choir on occasional Sundays at 4:00 p.m. Hymns, psalms, readings and canticles (Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) follow the lectionary, with choral anthems and organ music complementing scriptural themes.
Those who attend Evensong find it to be a serene service which offers time for prayer and meditation at the end of the day, and in preparation for a new week. It is an opportunity to invite guests from other parishes or other traditions to share in the spiritual conversation at Immanuel, and the social conversation at our reception which follows the service.
When you come to evensong here, it is as if you were dropping in on a conversation already in progress – a conversation between God and humanity which began long before you were born, and will go on long after you are dead. So do not be surprised or disturbed if there are some things in the conversation which you do not at once understand. (Coventry Cathedral)
A uniquely Anglican service, Evensong combines elements of both Evening Prayer and Compline… We give thanks for the day that is past, acknowledge our blessings and shortcomings, ask God’s protection for the evening hours, and offer prayer for the church and the world. (Grace Cathedral)
Advent Lessons and Carols
Following the Anglican tradition of Christmas Lessons and Carols, our Advent Service takes place in early December. We read seven lessons which foretell the coming of the Messiah, and complement these with festive choral music and instrumental offerings, all anticipating and celebrating the advent of Immanuel, God with us. A lively reception follows with food and fellowship.
Compline is a brief service of evening prayer, which the choir sings to complement an evening supper and adult education. Originating from the word for “complete” this service is a simple offering of prayer, scripture, and choral singing in a meditative evening setting.
